Circle K International   Cal-Nev-Ha District   Paradise Division   SDSU Circle K
Circle K International

Circle K is a co-educational service, leadership development, and friendship organization, organized and sponsored by a Kiwanis club on a college or university campus. It is a self-governing organization and elects its own officers, conducts its own meetings, determines its own service activities, and establishes its own dues structure. Its Objects include the Objects of Kiwanis. Once organized, a Circle K club continues to be sponsored by a Kiwanis club. Although the ultimate responsibility for Circle is that of the Kiwanis Board of Directors, the sponsorship function is most directly carried out by the Kiwanis club Committee on Circle K Clubs, assisted by a faculty advisor (who may or may not be a Kiwanian) designated by the college or university administration.

History of CKI

In 1936, the Kiwanis Club of Pullman, Washington, established “Circle K House” at Washington State College, which was rented to young men who needed assistance to attend college. For ten years the "Circle K House" became affiliated with a Greek letter organization, although it continued to be sponsored by the Pullman Kiwanis Club.

Eleven years later in 1947, Circle K transitioned from a fraternity to a service-oriented organization. That year, during September, the first Circle K club similar to our present day organization, was chartered at Carthage College in Carthage, Illinois.

In 1949, two more clubs were organized, including one in Canada, making Circle K international. There were 147 Circle K clubs in 1955, when Circle K was officially recognized as a sponsored organization of Kiwanis International

The Kiwanis Family

Each CKI must have one or more sponsoring Kiwanis Club. The program is designed for the Kiwanis members to interactively support the CKI. In addtion, most Kiwanis clubs provide financial support of the club and its members – including registration costs from convention and conferences and scholarships for graduating seniors. Kiwanis International is a worldwide organization of 8,400 adult community service clubs in more than 96 nations. It is the parent organization for all the members of the Kiwanis Family, a special group of dedicated youth and adults who provide more than 20 million hours of community service to thousands of communities every year. The Kiwanis family includes:

          • CKI, a student-led organization on college and university campuses.

          • Key Club International, a student-led organization for high school students.

          • Builders Club, a program for middle school students.

          • Kiwanis Kids Programs for elementary students.

Projects and Events

CKI has projects that are held each year where Circle Kers from all over our many districts come together to visit new places, meet new people, and learn leadership skills. These projects are:

          • International Conventions (ICON): Held every year. This is where the international president and executive board is elected as well as new amendments added to the Circle K bylaws. Usually lasting three days, one can spend time visiting the location where the event is held, attend workshops, and view visits from famous guest speakers!

          • Large Scale Service Project (LSSP): Usually takes place before ICON and can last up to several days, depending on the project. Circle Kers from all over international come together to work on the needs of the community they are in – this can range from helping refurbish a run down park to helping the Salvation Army.
